In his first book of poetry, A Simple Gift, Dean Robbins introduces readers to the people, places, and things he has known all his life. Not coincidentally, readers will almost certainly identify the adults and children, family gatherings, and Christmas tree farms, birds and insects, and sunrises and sunsets as those everyday keepsakes which are kept close to their hearts. Scattered among the familiar surroundings are joy and sorrow, loneliness and contentment. Feel the bittersweet pangs of parenthood as a father watches his daughter leave for her first day of school; enjoy the peacefulness of resting near an old stone wall situated amid an open field. Robbins, who was born in one small town and now lives in another just down the road, reminds us of what we might have forgotten about family ties, seasonal changes, and the daily occurrences (both good and bad) we have become accustomed to taking for granted.
