As he waits for certain death, Magnus, a young Viking herder, scribbles the story of his small group of Viking settlers in Leif Erikssonas Vinland. A thousand years later the hastily written scroll is discovered by a vacationing high school teacher. While reading the firsthand history, Jackson and his wife are pulled into their own journey of adventure. The cold North Atlantic and incomprehensible savages surround the Vikings as they struggle to carve a living out of the wilderness of Canada and along the shores of Maine. Deception among the sailors leads to bloody battles with the natives of the New World. Magnus writes blindly hoping that someone will know their plight. Jackson finds himself transformed from a passive Maine vacationer to an historical detective. History, Jackson learns firsthand, is fluid. He is amazed to find that the numerous avenues of modern communication can make a person feel as hopeless as scribbling on a salt-stained scroll.
