When lawman Ben Coe rode into the town of Salvation with his badge hidden in his boot, it was to take a suicidal task. He had come at the sheriff's request in order to double for the fiendish killer Turk Duret, whose atrocities had shocked the territory and had aroused the blood fury of the mob. Because statehood might depend on the maintenance of law and order, Duret had to be hanged legally. To do this someone would have to mislead the mob, and Coe was to be that decoy. He knew the risk he ran, for it was all too possible that the lynchers would make him pay for his deception at the end of Duret's hangrope.
