the formation mechanism of realistic networks is essential in understanding the complex world. i have scrutinized several papers on network formation, including the random model and the scale-free model. but the paper left little impression on me as i have so little experience with various realistic networks that i cannot the figure out the merits of these model in helping to understand the complex world. and i don`t understand the hypothesis or philosophy underlying these model.
originally, Paul Eros devised a random model for the formation of networks, which has many beautiful properties from a mathematical perspective. it can explain the small world effects but fail to clarify the scale-free features in realistic networks such as the Internet. the scale-free networks are extreme common in realistic world. persistent pursuit in capturing this characteristic lead to Babaras`s invention of a new model that covers the prevalent scale-free property.
this book gives various interesting examples to elucidate the interesting features in networks. and the personal and profound remarks leave me in deep thought over possibility of understanding networks in new ways. such example as a party scenario, where individuals are unfamiliar with one another and start to make random acquaintance with one another , help me to grasp the possible relationship between random model and realistic networks. the philosophy underlying this model is that each node is equivalent to one another and the total number of nodes remain constant. the random network grasps some features in realistic networks and is useful in certain network analysis. since the invention of random network, a lot of researchers have confined their imagination about the alternative ways to form networks. Babaras`s graph-growing model seems easy to be created. a naive guy might wonder why this model is not created earlier and doubt the creativity of this model. to understand this question, i recommend that you spend some years on research so that the difficulty of creation will curve an deep impression in your mind. taking into consideration of the prevalent influence on network researchers of previous random model is also conducive to a objective evaluation of the scale-free network.
foreign books dedicated for masses tend to be filled with a huge number of examples. in most cases, the repeating illustration of the same idea elicit boredom from readers. but this book is excellent in a balance between a clear illustration and adequate examples. actually, we need enough examples to acquire more understanding of the new subjects. the essential merit of this book is a diversity of examples.
in conclusion, it is a book that will free your imagination and encourage your observation and individual judgement. just enjoy it!
free your imagination with this book
