Collins said good-to-great companies stay in the industry where they have the potential to be the best. And he said it’s not equal to either “core business” or “core competence”. If the industry you have the most potential to do best is not the thing you are familiar with or you are have the competence to do, then what’s it? The good-to-great companies are the winners at the current point don’t necessary mean that they know everything better than their competitors ever since the beginning. People tend to favor the victors. Future is full of uncertainty. This kind of ex-post judgment would be unfair.
It is really disappointed that the Collins give no more explain about what should A level student do when facing the genius A+ student. To know something you can do better than anything eslse is simple, however to identify what you can do better than anyone else is something extremely hard. Theses good-go-great companies give up what they had been doing for long times to engage in another industry. Most of these companies did not turn to a completely different industry, rather they entry a related or sometime a niche market. They are still doing what they are good at, but in another market for another group of customers where they can gain higher profit margin and maybe less competition. Think about the Abbott Laboratories they shift to health care product because they have the “know how” due to their past experience and they gain higher profit while less pressure form conglomerate such as Merck. Kimberly Clark are still producing paper but for common consumer. What Walgreen are doing now is also based on their skills developed during serving customers with food in the past. What I want to say is that rather than bet on what you may do best in the world that you should stick to what you have the comparative competitiveness to do. However facing the changing world, you should be more flexible to entry the profitable niche market with quick action.
