As the author indicate very clearly at first page, this is a sampler for fact-finding about Mckinsey and Consulting industry. for anyone has ever experience the intensity and lifestyle of Consulting, this is not a fun book to read.
nevertheless, there are some good points worth recording for new generations of Mckinsey aspirant.
For problem solving method:
1 Data is the king, it is nonsense for any senior executive wasting his time for some junior to brag about the industry based on some MBA-style analysis without the hardcore fact-based analysis.
2 MECE is the must, not like other research, which dealing ambiguity is quite acceptable, Mckinsey strive to maintain a standard of reframing the solution. make it simple and clear, that's all MECE about.
3 Hypothesis is the way, start drawing the issue tree at the first day of client meeting, following the issue tree and relentlessly exploring and testing your hypothesis is the map to navigate you find the solution.
For conducting business
1 market not sell, be cool. for any senior consultant, it's not cool to play the usual selling strategy like a corporate firm. mastering the art of market not sell is the gist of Mckinsey's selling strategy
2 manage the customer expection well, it's better to make it clear what you can deliver in a timeline than overshooting your goal and retreat later.
3 good leadership rules. the construction and managing a group of super talent is so hard, a course itself worth a book to illustrate.
last but not least, do remember the important lessons from Mckinsey alum:
preserve your integrity at all times, be humility, whatever you are doing, someone did that before, find that person...etc
