Clara Barton excelled as a schoolteacher long before she helped to nurse wounded soldiers during the Civil War. While aiding the International Red Cross in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, Clara decided that the United States should also have a Red Cross organization. In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross and fought tirelessly to help countless disaster victims and wartime casualties.
