This 13th-century Old French verse romance has long been relegated to the status of "roman realiste." However, this translation will be of the greatest interest not only to medievalists but to feminist critics and scholars of early music. Feminists will study this tale and note that the lethargy and fecklessness of the male protagonists contrast sharply with the energy and initiative by which the heroine proves her innocence and wins her bridegroom. Music scholars will find the work of importance because it is the first French romance to intercalate portions of lyric song in a verse narrative. This courtly romance thematizes such issues as power, genre, the gaze, and authorial or narratorial subjectivity in a lively English translation.
