Volume 3 of "Bold Ventures" provides detailed insights about three notable U.S. innovations in mathematics education. The first case study illuminates the development, dissemination and use of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, including how NCTM assumed a policy role in mathematics education and the internal debates over the concepts comprising the standards. The second study explains how teachers at a magnet school, in a "grassroots" effort, developed and spread Contemporary Precalculus, a course that emphasizes modelling of real-world phenomena. The third case looks at the Urban Mathematics Collaboratives, a project that developed new models for meeting the ongoing professional development needs of inner-city teachers. These cases, along with the volume 2 studies of five science education innovations, comprise the United States participation in the largest cross-national case study project ever undertaken. Volume 1 reveals patterns among all eight U.S. innovations.
