When Sarah's parents divorced, she never thought the judge would give her mentally ill mother custody. But now, Sarah spends every weekend with her mother. Instead of hanging out with her friends or going to the movies, Sarah fights to survive her mother's violent mood swings and wicked temper. Thrust into a depression of her own, Sarah struggles to find her place, to become more than just a victim of abuse. As she grieves the loss of the mother she once knew, Sarah's voice resonates throughout her poems. Sometimes despairing, sometimes angry, Sarah somehow manages to be hopeful as she begins to make important decisions that will change her life. Beginning with simply shedding her dark clothes and depressed-girl image, Sarah takes small steps that she hopes will give her a fresh start. But as her poems reveal, Sarah must make choices with greater impact. As her mother becomes more and more abusive, as Sarah's life becomes more and more chaotic, Sarah must find a way to keep on going.
