In Georgia during the spring of 1970, fourth grader Jean Marie Alton thinks that nothing is more important than her audition for the coveted solo in her schoolas upcoming concert. She finds herself thinking about the audition at home, at church, and at school. In her words, aI appreciate the singing voice that God gave me, so why shouldnat I get to share it with everyone?a Jean is self-centered and spoiled and she has much to learn, especially when she finds out that her class rival, Laura Abner, is also planning to audition for the solo. To make matters worse, Jeanas mom informs her that she must help with spring cleaning around the house on the weekend before the audition. How will Jean find time to practice her solo? What will happen on audition day? The rivalry between Jean and Laura requires them to face challenges that they never expected.
