Wrongfully convicted of murder, con man John Adams escapes from New Orleans and flees north. In Toledo, he seizes the opportunity to impersonate deceased private detective Marcus Phoenix. He must put the investigation of his own case on hold when a beautiful dark-haired widow, who also travels under an assumed name, insists he investigate the death of her husband. The police call it suicide; the widow calls it murder. When the local Mafia boss tells him to drop the case, Marcus refuses. Soon after, his witnesses are violently eliminated. Marcus too is now convinced the offense was murderaeven if the victimas motel room door was locked from the inside. Maybe if he could talk to the woman whose strands of blond hair were found on a pillow next to the victim, he could solve the crime and get back to his own problems.
