Destiny and a Man of Little Conscience is a story of downfall and survival set in the late 18th century. It is the tale of Frederick March, a man of substance and connections, who has attained his status by villainous acts, smuggling and tax evasion. He is apprehended and interred in the notorious Newgate Prison and is eventually sentenced to death. This sentence is commuted to transportation to Port Jackson, Australia. March suffers the indignity of an overcrowded Newgate and incarceration on a prison hulk on the River Medway. He boards HMS Guardian, which collides with an iceberg in the Great Southern Ocean. After trial and tribulation, Guardian struggles back to Cape Town and is wrecked in False Bay. The story ends with Frederick March, filled with trepidation, facing another attempt to reach Australia across the most violent seas in the worldathe dreaded Roaring Forties.
