From first to last The Old Stone House Mystery is filled with light mystery, humor, romance, and adventure with a little psychology and philosophy thrown in for good measure. The story is set in somewhat modern times (1972), but the mystery involved takes the characters back to the Underground Railroad era. The setting is a small town along a river in northern Ohio. Tragedies out of the past bring two young people together. Melissa Bancroft and Hal Andrews solve a few mysteries involving their ancestors and the large estate where Melissa lives. Struggling with issues of womenas liberation and independence, 21-year-old Melissa lives with her eccentric great aunt, Victoria Sheldon. Hal has recently been disillusioned about women and sometimes takes out his frustrations on Melissa. Sparks fly amidst lots of humor and common sense philosophy. Tension is relieved by a friend, Steve Wilson, who plays guitar and sings the folk songs of the time.
