Tom Meadows, a disillusioned social worker from Chicago, is vacationing with his family in Lakeshore, Ohio, a picturesque resort on a peninsula jutting into Lake Erie. When Tom meets Kathy Reardon, they discover in each other the same relentless grief that plagues their lives. Both Tom and Kathy blame themselves for the loss of cherished people to violent deaths, and this guilt has dismantled their identities. When Kathy, a waitress, serves his family, she impulsively passes a note to Tom. Seemingly harmless at first, in actuality, the note dramatically and permanently alters their lives. Tom recklessly jeopardizes his marriage and job by remaining in Lakeshore to be with Kathy. Kathy risks the invulnerability of solitude to find love again. Little do they know that Kathyas note will eventually lead them to risk their lives in saving a young woman from a perverse and savage killer.
