This book deals with two topics that may appear to be unrelated. The first topic is whether or not the term "African-American" refers to a race, a nationality, an ethnic group, or a culture. The second topic deals with both current and retrospective racial issues. If one looks closely at both topics, then one can see that they are somewhat intertwined-many Americans of black African descent have chosen to identify themselves as African-Americans. This is probably because they feel maladjusted in an intolerant American society. This intolerance is an ensuing effect of the past relationship between the former slave and former slave master. This book ultimately shows that the term "African-American" is indeed an inappropriate term to describe Americans. It introduces two types of racism-active and reactive racism-that are directly related to the relationship between the former slave and former slave master.
