Elaine Terry, a naive young woman, leaves the hills of Kentucky to enlist in the Womenas Army Corps. There is never a dull moment as she struggles through basic training in a barracks shared with one hundred forty-nine other recruits. After graduating from clerical school she is assigned to Ft. McClellan, Alabama, where she meets and becomes attracted to PFC Alberto Montoya from South America. Elaineas world is turned upside down when she falls in love for the first time. Montoya has a vague knowledge of English and she speaks very little Spanish. Elaine becomes the youngest Acting First Sergeant in the history of the WAC Training Battalion. She embraces the many challenges and disappointments with pride, honor and dignity until, in a moment of passion, she lowers her principles, resulting in a situation that threatens to destroy her career and her self-respect.
