The novel opens with 20-year-old Bonnie Bouyney on her way back home by stagecoach after three years away from her grandfather's ranch. For those years, she studied in the north to become a teacher. Once home, Bonnie must uncover events that transpired in her absence. While getting readapted to life back home, Bonnie's grandfather takes ill, and she and Joe go for medicine. This is a piece of historical fiction, which chronicles the lives of a variegated family, all of whom find love in their differences. They make a home out of the sheer energy of their hearts. The story covers more than a thirty-year period from the 1870s to the dawn of the nineteenth century in the Lone Star State.
