The headlines in the morning newspapers shook up the town. Two career businesswomen, Ms. Lily Towson and Gabrielle Rawlings, had been brutally raped and murdered in their apartment on the east side of the city. The police, working feverishly, maintained that there were no suspects, yet. However, they were confident that they would have the perpetrator or perpetrators in custody in the next 24 hours. When asked, Sergeant Harrison S. Washburne, of the 23rd Precinct, in charge of the investigation, "assured" his questioners that "the solution was imminent." The young women were highly regarded assistant vice presidents at the prestigious advertising firm of Spiegel, Tellerman and Quill, one of the nation's largest. The shock of the gruesome murders left the city paralyzed with fear and horror. Neighbors of the decedents were unable to offer the police any definitive worthwhile information, with the exception of Mrs. Golda Nussbaum of Apartment 3B. She apprised the investigating officers that she had seen a man delivering clothing from a neighborhood dry cleaning store "that very day." She said he was a black man.
