The tale is placed in the Baltic Sea and along the coast of the Baltic, to be an account of ships, the men in them, and the game in which the players stand to lose their lives or personal freedom. The stories lighted the reality on board the vessels of convenience and the living condition of ordinary people during the unlawful period just after the collapse of Communism and the breaking up the Soviet Union; many of the newly formed countries became havens for illegal activities. The tale is about smuggling, trafficking and conspiracy in this context. An unnamed narrator encounters an old acquaintance at a ferry port and as they sit and have a drink, he is told the story of Orlovs unwitting involvement in the story. When a bank refuses a loan to pay for his own vessel, Orlov turned to Oskar, a well-known businessman whose real worth no one knows for sure. Oskar indeed purchases the ship for him, but is also the one to find him the fated assignment. Upon discovering exactly what the cargo he is carrying contains, Orlov devises a plan to get himself out of the situation without betraying Oskar or landing himself in jail.
