Jay is a divorced former Navy and twice laid-off airline pilot who needs money for his critically ill son. Old acquaintance Collie, accompanied by Vee, a beautiful Nicaraguan Contra, offers a solution. They survive close encounters with thugs and Federal agents before even reaching El Aguacate, the airfield in Honduras built by the U.S. to support the Contras. Jay receives an education on the history of conflict in Vee's native country. The mutual affection between Jay and Vee grows and they make plans for the future, but futures are uncertain in wars. Flying aid to the Contras is dangerous, as evidenced by close calls with Sandinista ground and air forces, but no more so than Collie's associates, who are dealing in illegal drugs. Resisting the drug runners' plans results in a dramatic confrontation. Jay escapes and makes a harrowing flight back to the States, even as Hurricane Gilbert is bearing down on south Texas.
