After his civil divorce, Emmett O'Toole files for an annulment of his twelve-year marriage. He claims that he suffered "a lack of discretion of judgment" on his wedding day. The Catholic Church investigates. Alice, his ex-wife, objects and retains two female lawyers who claim that her .,."until death do us part..." contract will be broken illegally by an annulment. At trial, her lawyers charge that Emmett will lie to the Church's Marriage Tribunal, and Alice will be unable to expose his deceit because the Church will not allow her to see Emmett's testimony or cross-examine him. The bishop is near panic. The jury's decision might force the Church to open its clandestine annulment procedures to a public hearing. This, on top of other scandals, will not sit well in Rome, and it will surely scuttle the bishop's chance for a cardinal's red hat.
