George and Martha McBride have long made their home in the Southern Heartland of North Carolina. Their prosperous plantation borders the Cape Fear River a few miles northeast of Fayetteville. Amidst the towering oaks and sprawling fields of King Cotton an Irish dream has been realized. Fulfillment further takes root in the happiness of raising a family. The two oldest brothers are named Richard and James. They are soon followed by their sisters, Mary and Cynthia. Three years hence in the spring of 1840 young Jeremy is born. Birth does not come easily to him. Perhaps for this reason his mother has since fostered an overly protective love for him. Also, considering the influence of a devoted mammy it has become increasingly apparent that he is of a highly sensitive nature. Especially towards a world that will eventually test more acutely his compassionate spirit. Except for the lingering whispers of a Civil War a peaceful calm prevails. Although few folks can deny the faint rumblings of a storm. A conflict that will engulf the nation not yet divided betwixt the North and the South. Indifferent to the prevailing breeze Jeremy's thoughts reflect the joy of youth. Including the occasional glances of a young girl known as Rebecca. A slave who vies for his attention. However, it is a forbidden gesture tolerated only by the innocent in heart. Although the story is fictional the focus upon a devoted family caught up in the American Civil War portrays the tragic suffering of an era. Hence the emphasis of spirit reflects love and reveals a shadowing of historical events.
