Sam Keefe-a child of a career atomic worker, a child of the bomb. Fresh from college, Sam accepts what seemed his inheritance-a job at the government's plutonium factory at Hanford, Washington. There, another generation of bomb makers labor at the kilns of mutually assured destruction. Sam's childhood in the isolated government town housing the workers' families ingrained him with unwavering faith in his federal benefactors. His new career brings a sense of pride and duty, but when the Cold War-weary world closes in on his sheltered life, and dream-fulfilling love, and finally overwhelming sadness wakes him from a lifelong slumber, things don't seem so simple anymore: truth is not so clear; trust is not so easy; fathers are not so perfect. There was something wrong with Sam's boyhood atomic paradise, something terribly wrong. It would take unspeakable pain to seek it out and unimaginable courage to accept it.
