Retired psychiatrist, Andrew Clark, severely depressed after the unexpected death of his wife, decides to write a scientific paper about his favorite subject-the long-term effects of childhood abuse. The material for this paper would come from the files of the children he had interviewed at the county hospital. In his research, he uncovers a file whose contents have been confiscated by the FBI. Feeling the information in that file is essential to the paper, he sets out to find the now grown child named Alfred Burnett. Born in 1950 to an alcoholic father and a psychotic mother, the search uncovers a life filled with physical, mental, and sexual abuse, a perfect subject for the paper. But why did the FBI confiscate the files? What was his crime? Obsessed with the search and realizing he lacks an ending to a story that begs to be told, the search continues until he uncovers the answers.
