This is a book based on the lives of countless Filipinos who migrate to the United States every year. The story, in particular, deals with the lives of Emyang and Mang Romy, residents of a small town in a rural area of the Philippines. The book illustrates the unique culture and landscape of a country in Southeast Asia, through the eyes of an immigrant like myself, searching for an identity amidst a borrowed culture and lifestyle. As the story unfolds, we stumble upon a love story and a hardworking farmer. It can be gleaned from the description of the culture, the people and places, a culture marked by indigenous economies and spirituality that wound up fragmented internally through a series of foreign invasions and encounters. The thrust of the varied plots is pointed at America, the land of opportunity. In America, Emyang and Mang Romy pin their hopes for a better life, sure and enthusiastic about change and progress, personally and for society as a whole.
