"Ruf Cut" is a hard-hitting novel set in 1975 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It follows a year in the life of Sam, a sixteen-year-old girl whose mother died when she was eleven years old. Sam comes from a squalid council estate in the heart of Bradford, where prostitution, stealing and general law breaking are the norm. The repercussions in Sam's life of growing up motherless, having an alcoholic father and getting involved with the wrong people are shocking to say the least. Feeling unloved and unwanted, Sam falls in love with the wrong person, a West Indian called Ruf, and her life takes dramatic twists and turns from petty thief to street prostitute, to brothel worker in London. There are many surprises, shocking experiences, and humour mixed with raunchy activity in this hard-hitting novel, revealing life at the bottom end of the spectrum.
