A young soldier at the end of World War II, rather than return to an unhappy life in backwoods Georgia, decides to run away and make his home in an underground bunker on a deactivated Army post. He fares well living off rations he swiped from mess halls and on wild game and fish until his loneliness eventually causes him to venture into a nearby town. Among other adventures, he meets a pretty girl. They fall in love. She convinces him to turn himself in. It is a heart-warming story about Ginger and Buckas courtship, his stay in the post stockade with fellow prisoners, his success as a budding artist, their marriage, his reunion with his alcoholic father, the tragedy which befalls him and the heartache which follows until Ginger comes to the rescue.
