From the Virginia slave rebellion of 1831 led by Nat Turner, through the Mormon troubles in northwest Missouri in the 1830s, to the Bloody Kansas period of the 1850s, and, finally, to the destruction of Lawrence, Kansas, in 1863 by Confederate guerrillas led by William Quantrill, Lawrence Burning is a broad depiction of the difficulties of life in Kansas and Missouri in the mid-nineteenth century.
