Starting with aiding Marie Daniels in her escape from the ruthless brothers of her abusive, imprisoned husband, some of the problems Jerico faces include using Mescalero Indians as wranglers and keeping the army from forcing them onto a reservation. He also has to deal with raiding Navajos. He finds a way to deliver horses to the army without using Indian wrangers, but his half-brother, who has his own plans for the canyon, is a source of frustration. A smallpox epidemic in the Indian village decimates the population. Outside help must be brought in or the operation halts. Jerico is faced with more difficult decisions. Ultimately, he confronts the Daniels brothers.
