The antics and adventures of a young mischievous blue jay, B.J., are told in seven short stories. B.J. habitually gets in trouble with her sister Betty, other birds and barnyard animals. In search of food, B.J. narrowly escapes the bites of a puppy, the claws of a sleepy barn owl and an angry hen. Betty forewarns the hardheaded B.J. about her daring behavior and has to rescue her from danger. When B.J. runs away from home, she runs into a hostile catbird village, a thunderstorm and a forest fire. She protects an ungrateful cowbird fledgling. B.J. realizes that it was a big mistake to run away from her caring family. A wiser B.J. returns home riding a freight train. From lessons learned, B.J. becomes a responsible character in the bird world. She saves Betty from a hungry butcherbird. She befriends a turkey and helps her escape the farmer's dinner table.
