Willas Landing serves up a touching mixture of emotions about a rich white Southerner and a black boy. Will and Joanne Waggoner, a childless middle-aged couple, live on their beautiful estate in central Louisiana in the mid-60s when Otis Jones, an eleven-year-old boy, walks into their lives and their hearts. Otis is immersed in poverty and has an abusive father, so Will teaches him how to dream and plan for the future. The boy develops an interest in architecture and goes off to college to pursue his dream, but an activist girlfriend changes his attitude toward whites and rips apart the friendship. Saddened, Will and Joanne give up any hope of ever having an adult relationship with the boy they knew so well. But over time, the bond prevails when the black architect, with a family of his own, and the aging philanthropist come to grips with one of lifeas greatest lessons. The theme is upliftingaa friendship and shared dreams make a legacy.
