Jason and Jacob Grant were looking forward to a fun-filled summer with no school and no homework. Thinking ahead, they planned to do some fishing, go swimming in the creek and visit with their friend, Thomas Jefferson Jones, known as Recollection, who, as a storyteller and confidant, is an important part of their lives. In this year of 1936, certain events in the world and in the little southern town of Ravenswood, turn their quiet world into an ugly, unsafe place. Recollectionas memories and observations influence the lives of these children, helping them to understand the confusing and sometimes terrifying events intruding on what was to have been a peaceful summer. The aged Negroas courage in the face of irrational malice acts as a bulwark against the cruelty of hate and brutality threatening to overrun their way of life and instills life values that helps shape their future.
