Bill Barker, a likable ex-con, leaves a Nevada prison after four years and sees his life filled with possibilities. While unsuccessfully trying to reunite with his wife and children, he learns that his aging mother and father are about to lose their Henry County, Kentucky, farm to greedy land developers. Bill goes to Kentucky to correct the problem single-handedly, but only makes matters worse. As a final resort, he calls upon his Las Vegas grifter friends to help him save the farm in a sting operation. The grifters arrive in Henry County and spend the long, hot summer blending into the farm community while cleverly laying a trap to salvage the farm for Bill's parents.
