This story is about a twentieth-century family involving four Callahan brothers who became very financially successful due to the foresight of their older brother, Jim. Jim had planned on building a retirement home where he and his lovely wife, Carol, would spend their old age mingling with the retirees. However, her sudden death shattered his dreams. Soon after Jim's retirement, he finds himself solving his nephew's problems. The feeling of being needed and wanted is gratifying. Jim is introduced to Ann, who is the owner of the Anderson Retirement Home. His pending visit is to be kept a secret even to Ann, who eventually becomes very important in Jim's life. This novel is about elderly people living their lives to the fullest. They see the home as an institution, not with negative consequences, but as a living, breathing place of refuge, where they can comfortably fulfill their hopes and dreams during the twilight of their lives.
