In the Lowcountry of South Carolina, three people fire shots at billionaire Bull Goldfield in his darkened mansion. Goldfield collapses, badly wounded and unconscious. Two shooters flee; one remains. Was it safecracker Fast Nickie Machetto? Was it art dealer Isadora Hawthorne, enraged at Bull for ending their tryst? Or was it Annabelle Goldfield, Bull's wife, fed up with his years of philandering? Police Chief Harry Doyle doesn't know, because the body is missing. Dr. J. Beauregard Reuchmaire, a semi-retired and somewhat quirky psychiatrist (he pronounces his name ROCKmore), who indulges in heroic daydreams and memories of the romantic South, comes in to assist Chief Doyle. Key to the issue is the Mammy Queen, a personage of great reverence among the Gullah, Lowcountry black people descended from former slaves. She knows de ju ju, and the answer.
