Sara White and her two children visit her deceased Native American husbandas family in North Carolina for the first time. Grandmother Willow, family matriarch, uses her wisdom and unique philosophy of life to teach Sara the ways of the ancestral spirits, and uses animal analogies to encourage Sara to open her mind to their guidance. Unfortunately, Sara finds the spiritual ways of the family difficult to understand and believe. Her children, however, are immediately comfortable with their new way of life and new family, which includes their Aunt Nantahala and her son Tooni. Saraas instant attraction to Zachary Hawk, a red-haired Irish Indian, is strong as he mentors her in the ways and traditions of the Cherokee clan.Sara witnesses many strange and unexplainable encounters with the aancestral spirits, a eventually becoming a great believer. There is humor and mystery, as Sara ultimately finds the path to her destiny.
