"Mabel and Her Litter of Eight" is a work of fiction which takes place on an historic farm in rural Pennsylvania and centers around Mabel, a homeless stray cat about to give birth to a litter of eight and Mrs. Pottinger, the elderly woman who owns the farm. Having searched all over the countryside for a place to have her litter, Mabel discovers an open vent under Mrs. Pottinger's house and has her litter there with the intention of finding a permanent place to live before her litter's eyes have opened. Aided by Shorty, a kind-hearted country dog, and Delilah, a worldly feline friend, Mabel seeks the father of her children for assistance in this endeavor; but discovers that he has moved to the city and can therefore not be counted on for support. Discouraged, Mabel returns to Mrs. Pottinger's who is enjoying a visit with her daughter and two grandchildren. They discover the kittens under Mrs. Pottinger's house while playing hide and seek with the neighbor boys, but not before Shorty heroically saves two of the cats from being hit by a car and is himself injured. Homes are found for Mabel and her litter, Shorty recovers fully from his injuries, and life goes on for Mrs. Pottinger in that wonderfully slow manner that is as countrified as the township in which she lives. And although she doesn't find the father of her children, Mabel does find herself and her own personal strength along the way while learning life lessons about love, hope, faith, courage, and integrity.
