I like the humor throughout the chapters of the book, the author is good at translating academic seriousness to practical guidelines about the rather obscure PhD education system, In particular, I like the chapter6 to chapter13, which I believe is the most important part of constructing a successful PhD career.
nevertheless, I will start record some general tips about the PhD research, and explore the notes from the chapters I mentioned.
top tips:
read, seasoned researcher need 100-50 papers to form the core ideas about their research.
write, writing need practice, write from the first day of your research, revise often,
keep on bibliography, I like zotero more than endnote,
form a informal committee, this is easy said than done, no harm to try some nice profs around you
expose your work, publishing, I rephase it here
so what? learn to ask other questions, learn to invert the question and expose it from alternative perspectives
read one completed dissertation, understand the structure, content, style
Writing tricks
removing distractions
getting started asap. start with the easies part, skip the introduction
extreme writing, set a target, then write extensively in a fixed period, like the douban daily editing,
any writing is better than no writing, no editing until everything is written once, keep it simple, stupid
general advice
make a commitment to write sth everyday and to produce a finished piece of writing a week
try to present materials in writing at every supervisor session
take some time to analyse the critique of writing and analyze the change
to be continued
