大学前夕,我有幸拜读了吉姆.克斯林的《从优秀到卓越》。对于这本书我想大家并不陌生,二十世纪最有影响力的商业畅销书之一。可能大部分人是冲着这个名号和成功的心理阅读这本书,而我阅读的动力却是好奇心。好奇心促使克斯林和他的团队花了五年时间调研和撰写了这本书,最终凝聚的思想和理念成了人类永恒的财富。好奇心使我翻开这本书,细细品味书中种种,努力发现优秀与卓越真正的关系。奈何我才疏学浅,最终了解不过十之一二。
“优秀是卓越的大敌”在本书的开篇,作者简明扼要的点出了优秀与卓越的关系。从优秀到卓越,看似只有一步的距离,可又有多少人在达到优秀后止步不前,碌碌无为,最终走向平庸。又有多少人在追求卓越的过程中偏离了轨道,迷失了方向。优秀是实现卓越的前提和基础,同时也是实现卓越最大的障碍。“绝大多数公司始终未能成为卓越的公司,大部分是因为它们是优秀的公司。”这是作者多年研究后的无奈,也是作者写此书的动力。
这个时间正在不断变化,也将继续如此,但这并不意味着我们不应该探索永恒的规律。作者从现实着手,筛选了十一家实现跨越的公司,并将之与实力相近但最终失败的公司对比,从不同方面进行详细的分析,最终发现从优秀到卓越的奥秘。
领袖是一个公司的核心。追求卓越必须拥有第五级经理人。他们个个拥有雄心壮志,但总把集体的利益放在第一位。他们表现出一种令人折服的谦虚,同时也表现出工人的勤劳。杜鲁门曾说“只要你不计功利,就能做成任何一件事。”第五级经理人就是这样,为了使公司走向卓越,他们有决心做任何事,不管这些决定有多么重大,多么困难。
企业追求卓越第二步即“先人后事”。所谓“先人后事”是指先满足企业对人才的需求,再去谈如何做事。关于这点克斯林有一个十分形象的比喻“我们不清楚应将这辆汽车驶向何处,但有一点毋庸置疑:如果我们有合适的人在车上,并各就其位,而不合适的人已下车,然后我们就可以确定如何将它开向某个卓越之地。”当今社会瞬息万变,计划往往赶不上变化,只有先找到合适的人才,团结在一起迅速调整方向,重新上路,适应时代的发展,实现从优秀到卓越的转变。
丘吉尔曾说“对于国家领导人而言,没有什么错误会比误以为事情会自行解决的妄想更令人不可饶恕了。”对于一个集体没有什么比直面残酷的现实更重要的了。所有实现跨越的公司都是通过面对残酷的现实为起点,从而走向成功的。公司从优秀走向卓越需要创造一个人们有无数机会被倾听的文化氛围,不断发现问题,面对问题,解决问题,在困境中变得更强大。
在本书中有一个让我印象深刻的理念,即刺猬理念。这是一个清晰的理念,由“你对什么充满热情” “是什么驱动你的经济引擎” “你能在什么方面成为世界上最优秀的”三个部分重叠而成。当你发现做一件事总是充满激情,让你有价值感时,也许你不敢说自己达到了卓越,但个人能力一定得到了提升,实现了自我完善。
持续辉煌的业绩需要建立一种训练有素的文化。一方面需要人们遵守一贯制度同时它也给了大家制度框架下的自由和责任。个人在这种文化氛围下有执着进取精神,严于律己,无需管理。当然要取得持续的效果,最重要的形式是坚持刺猬原理,愿意放弃一切违背三环理论的机会。
技术是发展势头的推动力而非创造者。没有哪一个公司在转变初期就率先使用技术。只有当自己知道需要什么样的技术时,才能更好地应用技术,并且在公司取得突破性进展之后,才能成为技术应用的先驱者。
“革命意味着转动车轮。”作者通过研究发现,从优秀到卓越并不是一蹴而就的。只有不断积累,循序渐进才可能有所飞跃。如果想通过一次决定性的行动和一闪而过的灵感实现从优秀到卓越的转变,最终只能收获令人失望的结果,因此从优秀到卓越没有决定性的行为,没有雄伟的规划,没有一日千里的创新,没有幸运的突破,更没有奇迹的瞬间,有点只是坚持不懈的积累,最终实现突破。
卓越是一种挑战,当你到达优秀之后,这种挑战就会和你不期而遇,也许你选择了逃避,但你无法避免走向平庸。只有勇于面对,接受这永无止境的挑战,才有可能走向成功。吉姆.克斯林曾经说过:“任何一个从优秀到卓越的跨越都要时刻关注自己的发展轨迹,不断追求更好的表现和更大的影响,无论你已经取得了什么样的曾经,如果与自己可能达到的最佳状态相比,你始终有不足。因此,对卓越的追求本身就是个动态的过程,是没有终点可言的,一旦你以为自己已经非常卓越,那滑向平庸的过程也就开始了。”
水往低处流,但不是所有的水都能流向大海,有些中途干涸,有些流向小水沟。纵观国内企业,优秀的不多,而卓越的就更少,不论是优秀也好,卓越也罢,都包含“人、思想、行为”三要素,而三种要素只有是训练有素的、高水平的,才能实现公司质的跨越。真正的卓越公司与外聘的高级经理无关,与内部薪酬系统无关,甚至与技术、规模、环境都没有必然的联系,他们不卑不亢、不轰轰烈烈、不刻意创造转变,不存在侥幸的突破和从天而降的奇迹,唯一与卓越密切相关的是,选定适合的目标和路径,坚定地走下去!
