Tribune Marcus Portus had everything going for him in Roman society. He seemed destined for greatness, but a dramatic event during his first battle in Germania causes him to lose faith in the existence of the gods. A second event makes him question why he abhors immorality if the gods do not exist, leading him to his old teacher of philosophy, then to a reading of the First Book of Moses, and finally to the one true God. Duty takes him to Corinth where he meets Paul and Timothy. After being seriously wounded in Armenia, he returns to Rome where he serves in the senate. Marcus struggles with balancing his duty and his Christianity in Neroas Rome. As we follow Marcus we encounter a number of historical characters, and they each have an impact on his faith.
